Texas-style barbecue with a real kids menu and a large fenced backyard for cornhole and running around. The green space is the difference between eating with children here and carrying barbecue home.
A taproom inside a former ice plant on Hendricks. The building does a lot of the work here, and a beer list has no way of saying so.
A Mexican kitchen and bar at Jacksonville Beach with its own vegan menu. Enchiladas, quesadillas, jackfruit birria, cauliflower tacos, and a full vegan entree give a mixed table more than one safe fallback.
Folio Weekly described a small strip-mall spot at the Gate Parkway exit, with an Ikea across the street, when it reviewed the place in 2023 under the earlier owners. Its own site says it has been under new ownership since August 2024, and it offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free starters.

Smashburgers that outgrew a food truck. The San Marco storefront on Hendricks took over the space Good Dough used, which makes it one of the few rooms in the city where the origin story is shorter than the lease.
Plant-based Southern comfort food on Edgewood Avenue, run in its own words as a local vegan establishment. A fully vegan kitchen, so there is nothing to ask about and nothing to substitute.
Scott and Gabrielle Alters run a dinner-only French room at the entrance to San Marco Square, with an open kitchen, a la carte and tasting menus, and a published list of the local farms they buy from. MICHELIN Recommended it in 2026, in the guide's first statewide Florida selection.
Navy retiree Foday Sambolah and his wife turned a Leonid Road property into a takeout barbecue restaurant. The menu puts slow-smoked brisket and ribs beside Caribbean dishes such as smoked oxtail, jerk ribs and curry goat.
Underbelly did not disappear. Longtime local music bookers Mike Ciero and Steve Blaisdell took over, renamed the Bay Street room The Albatross, and gave its menu the names of Jacksonville music venues that actually did close.
This is a music venue. It is loud when a show is on.
A Murray Hill bar that serves only plant-based food, pours beer and wine, books local live music, and stays open late, with an arcade and pool tables. The rare room that belongs on a vegan list and a nightlife list at the same time.
This is a music venue. It is loud when a show is on.
Andrew Zelade and Anthony Hashem bring Texas barbecue and Texican ideas to Mandarin. Zelade learned the craft in Austin smokehouses, while Hashem brought the Jacksonville restaurant side of the partnership.
