ABBQ Meat & Drink

Atlantic Beach · $$ · bbq, texas bbq

Texas-style barbecue with a real kids menu and a large fenced backyard for cornhole and running around. The green space is the difference between eating with children here and carrying barbecue home.

Aardwolf Brewing Company

San Marco · $$

A taproom inside a former ice plant on Hendricks. The building does a lot of the work here, and a beer list has no way of saying so.

Ajua Mexican Kitchen and Bar

Jacksonville Beach · $$ · mexican

A Mexican kitchen and bar at Jacksonville Beach with its own vegan menu. Enchiladas, quesadillas, jackfruit birria, cauliflower tacos, and a full vegan entree give a mixed table more than one safe fallback.

Amazing Thai

Southside · $$ · thai, asian

Folio Weekly described a small strip-mall spot at the Gate Parkway exit, with an Ikea across the street, when it reviewed the place in 2023 under the earlier owners. Its own site says it has been under new ownership since August 2024, and it offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free starters.

BellyUp! Jax / Over 50

Over 50 Jacksonville

Nobody publishes the noise level, and it is the thing that decides the night.

Good places to eat and drink in Jacksonville, minus the nightclubs. When a spot gets loud later or draws a lot of kids, the card tells you.

15 spots

Biscottis

Avondale · $$$ · american, bakery, brunch

A St. Johns Avenue bistro that started as a 37-seat coffeehouse in 1993 and grew into one of the village's anchors. The covered patio faces the avenue, and the dessert case is still part of the reason people walk in.

Bold City Brewery

Riverside · $$

Mother-and-son founded, and still the brewery most Jacksonville drinkers name first. The Rosselle Street taproom is the original room, on a Riverside industrial block rather than a retail strip.

Bono's Pit Bar-B-Q

Southside · $ · bbq

Jacksonville has been pulling trays from Bono's since Lou Bono fired up the first pit in 1949. The original moved to Beach Boulevard as the expressway came through, and today's 4907 Beach Boulevard room is the direct link to that story.

Buddha Thai Bistro

Jacksonville Beach · $$ · thai, asian

A Jacksonville Beach Thai restaurant that says it has served Thai food since 2010 and was once called Buddha's Belly. Its own About page says the dishes were made to share, and the menu has khao soi, crispy honey duck and vegan wings.

Dos Gatos

Downtown · $$

A cocktail lounge on Forsyth across from the Florida Theatre, open since 2009, which in downtown Jacksonville bar years is a long time. The pre-show and post-show room for anything at the Theatre.

Go early. It turns into a late-night spot later in the evening.

European Street Cafe Riverside

Riverside · $$ · sandwiches, european, american

The Riverside room of a Jacksonville family-owned group that has been here for more than 40 years. On Mondays, children age 12 and younger get a free meal and juice box with a regular adult entree and beverage at all three locations.

Indochine Downtown

Downtown · $$ · thai, asian, vietnamese

Indochine is on the second floor of a building at 21 East Adams that was built in 1910. Mark and Ladda Salter and chef Susie Sysouvanh opened it in 2010, and Mark built the tables and booths himself, the Jax Daily Record reported.

Jack Rabbits

San Marco · $

A 300-capacity club on Hendricks, across from the Balis Community Center, that has been booking original bands for more than twenty-five years. Beer and wine only, and all ages, which is part of why it has lasted.

This is a music venue. It is loud when a show is on.

MOJO No. 4

Avondale · $$ · bbq, southern

The Avondale room in the local MOJO family has served barbecue, Southern sides, whiskey, and blues on St. Johns Avenue since 2011. The patio and giant onion rings make it hard to mistake for a quiet takeout stop.

Pattaya Thai

Riverside · $$ · thai, asian

The owner's parents opened a small Asian food store with a cafe on University Boulevard in 1989, and by 1990 it had grown into a full restaurant called Pattaya Thai, the restaurant's own story says. Its menu says every curry is made with 100 percent coconut milk.

Pete's Bar

Neptune Beach · $

Duval County liquor license number one, issued in 1933 the year Prohibition ended, in a building that was Jensen's Market before that. Cash, pool tables, and no interest whatsoever in being discovered.

Go early. It turns into a late-night spot later in the evening.

Shantytown Pub

Springfield · $

A longtime Springfield dive with an outdoor area and room for dogs. Go when you want a neighborhood bar that still feels like one.

Go early. It turns into a late-night spot later in the evening.

Simply Tasty Thai

$$ · thai, asian

Chef Nancy Straw is from Phrae in northern Thailand and learned to cook from her mother and grandmother. Its own site says it has been cooking for Jacksonville since 2009.

Sweet Theory Baking Co.

Riverside · $ · bakery, desserts

Entirely vegan since 2012, on King Street in Riverside. The distinction that matters here is fully vegan kitchen rather than vegan option, and this is the former.

The Fox Restaurant

Avondale · $$ · american, breakfast, brunch

A breakfast-and-lunch counter where the line can reach the sidewalk on a busy morning. The open kitchen, fox drawings, and old diner rhythm make it feel less like a themed room than a place the neighborhood kept making its own.
